How to Track a SWIFT Payment Using a UETR

Waiting for an international payment? You don't always need to call your bank just to check its reported status.

If you have the payment's UETR, you can try a free status check with UETRACE. No registration, email address or additional payment details are required for the basic website check.

What is a UETR?

UETR stands for Unique End-to-End Transaction Reference.

It is a unique 36-character identifier used to identify a payment across the banking chain. Unlike an invoice number or a bank's internal transaction reference, the UETR is designed to remain unchanged as the payment moves between participating institutions.

A UETR is a reference, not a live GPS location. Having one does not prove that a payment was executed.

Where can I find my UETR?

Start with the payment confirmation issued by the sending bank. Depending on the document, the UETR may appear as:

If you cannot find it, ask the sender to obtain the UETR from their bank. If you are the beneficiary, you normally need to obtain the reference from the sender or through the banks handling the transfer.

How to check a SWIFT payment

Step 1 — Obtain the UETR. Copy the complete reference from a reliable bank-issued document.

Step 2 — Open UETRACE. Enter the UETR into the free payment-checking form.

Step 3 — Review the result. If information is available, read the reported status and any accompanying explanation.

Step 4 — Decide what to do next. A payment still processing may need another check. A rejection or return may require contacting the sending bank. A reported credit can be reconciled with the beneficiary's account.

UETRACE provides three free website checks per day.

What can a payment status tell me?

A status may indicate that a payment is being processed, has been credited, has been rejected or is being returned. It is important to distinguish a reported payment event from confirmed receipt visible in a customer's bank account.

Tracking information depends on what is available for the particular transaction. Not every bank or payment is covered equally.

What if my UETR returns no result?

A missing result does not necessarily mean the payment was never sent. The reference may be incorrect, information may not yet be available, or the payment may not be visible through the available reporting information.

Check the reference carefully and contact the sending bank if you need confirmation that the payment was actually executed. Be particularly cautious if someone sends you only a UETR or a screenshot and claims that this proves payment. It does not.

Can UETRACE follow changes automatically?

Yes. Eligible paid plans in the UETRACE Telegram bot can check for further status information and notify you when a change is detected. Automatic monitoring does not mean banks publish updates continuously or that every payment stage can be observed.
